Soile Ylivuori: “Women’s bodies and the culture of politeness: creating and contesting gendered identities in eighteenth-century England”. Lectio praecursoria 12.12.2015.

In my dissertation, I show that Montagu, Burney, Talbot, and Delany used different tactics or strategies to gain freedom and resist normalising power. These tactics were focused around themes of exteriority, theatricality, and dissimulation, which were all particularly problematic and ambivalent concepts in the culture of politeness. Thus, the strategies of freedom were organised around those vulnerable aspects of politeness that allowed for multiple interpretations.
