Adapting history: Topelius’ The Surgeon’s Stories and cultural memory in Finland and Sweden

Zacharias Topelius’ novel The Surgeon’s Stories (1851–1866) was immensely popular in Finland and Sweden until the first half of the 20th century. Its themes and characters were widely adapted to different media from stage performances and paintings to board games. This article studies the functions of adaptation in the novel and its afterlives and aims to show how the concept can help understand the dynamic of cultural memory and the role of crossing national and media borders in it.
